An orange tree would never produce apple fruit or banana…It does not matter if this tree is planted in the rain forests of Puerto Rico or in the deserts of the Sahara ( I am not sure orange trees grow there); an orange tree would always produce oranges. It also does not matter if the orange tree is surrounded by other types of trees that produce other types of fruit, an orange tree would produce oranges!
Because the tree has been ‘programmed’ to produce oranges and therefore any fruit from that tree would be an orange. If an ‘orange’ tree bears apples, then the tree was never an ‘orange’ tree to begin with. This is because orange trees only bear oranges.
In the same way, if a person claims to be led by the Spirit and does not bear the fruit that the Spirit produces, then that person is not of the Spirit. It is that simple. That is really what it comes down to.
The bible says that, the fruit of the Spirit…one fruit…is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and self control. Now, no one is perfect, we are all striving towards perfection. We don’t always have it together. We are not always loving or joyful. We are not always harbingers of peace nor is patience always our strongest virtue. Sometimes we lose it and many times we are not always as good and kind as we should be, but…is this perpetual? Is there remorse after faltering and falling short? Is there striving to be all these things? Is there a desire to fully bear the fruit of the spirit? If the answers to these are in the negative, then begin to doubt the type of tree that it is, because the spirit would ALWAYS produce the fruit of the Spirit.
God loves us enough to take us the way we are, but loves us too much to leave us that way. You might have been a different tree before you met Christ but once you start walking with God, the Spirit immediately goes to work to produce fruit in you. The fruit therefore is all in the tree. The Spirit does not produce fruitless trees. Immediately He is invited into a life, he goes straight to work producing fruit…
So how can can can you read people? By checking out their fruit.
